This is not a coin bracelet. This is four hundred years of Japanese history, worn on your wrist.
The coin is a Mon, the currency of Japan from the Muromachi period in 1336 until its replacement by the yen in 1870. This specific piece dates from the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from Edo Castle between 1603 and 1868. Cast in copper, it circulated in a monetary system where 4,000 mon equaled one ryō — alongside silver and gold ingots that paid samurai, funded temples, and built the infrastructure of feudal Japan.
It was acquired during a matsuri at a Shinto shrine outside Kyoto, from a small private lot of aged and patinated pieces.
No two coins are identical. Each one carries its own patina, its own surface irregularities, its own four centuries of wear. That variation is not a flaw, t is the point.
The coin is mounted on multiple strands of premium kangaroo leather, braided and knotted by hand using traditional fisherman knots. The leather is reworked and conditioned for maximum flexibility and resistance. Two Tahitian black pearls, 10–11mm, grade C/C+, semi-baroque, one sits alongside the coin as a counterweight, one serves as the clasp.
